Source: The BEST way to learn piano chords (Open Studio, YouTube Shorts)

A two minute Short from Open Studio on what to learn after your first chords. The teacher’s order: root position triads all over the keyboard, then inversions, open voicings and broken chords under a melody, then sevenths, ninths and slash chords, and all twelve keys at the end. Each step in the teacher’s telling starts with “once I had that”.

TL;DR

  • Root position triads: play a note, skip a note, skip another
  • Move the shape around the piano, try other ranges
  • Inversions: voice leading, wider range
  • Open voicings: lighter versions of the same triads
  • Break chords up: melody on top, or arpeggios
  • Extensions: sevenths, ninths, slash chords
  • All 12 keys
